Genetics Workshop With Dr. Schmutz
Location: C.A.R.E. Centre Animal Hospital
2nd Floor, 7140 - 12 ST SE
Genetic disease - a challenging and controversial topic. Dr. Sheila M. Schmutz is widely known for her research in genetics and type in dogs.. Her genetic breed studies include the Afghan Hound, Chinese Shar-Pei, Italian Greyhound, Japanese Chin, Newfoundland, Poodles, Puli, Saluki and Shetland Sheepdogs.
Josef K. Schmutz is a conservation biologist, writer and dog breeder who believes in taking his research findings to the community. His articles focus on hunting dogs.
This full day workshop provides reassuring knowledge about genetics and canine disease for all serious dog breeders, regardless of breed. Workshop topics include:
- healthy puppies - why "not every dog should be bred"
- the concept of "once-on-a-pedigree"
- breeding a dog that carries a genetic disorder
- DNA tests and breeding stock selection
- teratogenesis (the production of birth defects in embryos and fetuses)
- coat color research (two hour portion of the workshop)
- complex gene interactions
- "color exercises" that illustrate the impact of genetics on dog breeding.
Workshop benefits:
Workshop exercises are designed to assist breeders to apply the knowledge presented to their breeding programs, in their quest to produce healthier puppies. Healthier puppies are more likely to meet the needs of owners; benefiting Albertans and breeders alike.
Workshop Funding
This workshop is sponsored by the Southern Alberta Toy Dog Fanciers Society, who gratefully acknowledge funding from the Government of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit Donation Grant Program through the Alberta Lottery Fund; in order to build strong communities and enhance the quality of life for Albertans.
