Walking Your Dog

"There is an off leash park along Highway 22x between the east and west lanes on the same access road as Spruce Meadows. I believe they are running it as well. It is a good size not busy. Warning barb wire fence only on perimeter so dogs may run into highway if they stray quite far from their owners. The path is not near the edges of the field though. Surprisingly quiet being on a highway."

There are many great places to walk your dog in Alberta. I have spend many hours getting to know and enjoying my dogs with the dogs at the end of a leash. There are a lot of places I would have never seen if I had not had a dog to motivate me to get out.

I am a bit of a voyeur I have to confess. I like to walk one direction along a ravine, like in the Rainbow Valley, then climb up the side of the ravine to the where the large houses are at the edge of the ravine and appreciate the gardens and architecture.

Red Deer

One Alberta residents says "Three Mile Bend is one of the best off-leash dog parks we have experienced with our dog. Right on the Red Deer river it has it all, paved paths for equal access, lots of ponds and wooded areas, open grassy fields, away from busy roads, picnic area and it's connected with the rest of Red Deer's trail systems." Sherwood Park

Sherwood Park has lots of great places to walk your dog. I enjoy the Sherwood Park Natural Area on Range Road 231 between Township Roads 520 and 522. It is close by the city, yet you feel like you are in the wilderness. The first time I was there I got my directions mixed up, doubled back on myself, then missed the exit/entrance path; so I would recommend paying close attention to where that path is.

Also in Strathcona County is the Blackfoot Grazing Reserve. The Blackfoot has kilometers of walking trails you can take your dog on. The trails are very well marked and it is a wonderful place to go.

Off Leash Areas

Just south of Highway 21 on Township Road 522. This off-leash area is a huge field. Most days it is not crowded, although there are usually two or three cars parked there.
